Terms of Service

The rules for using Explain This

Last updated: October 10, 2026

1. Agreement

By downloading, installing, or using Explain This ("the App"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don't agree, don't use the App.

2. What Explain This is

Explain This is a macOS utility that lets you select text in any app, press a hotkey, and receive an AI-generated explanation. It works by sending your selected text directly to the AI provider you choose (Google Gemini, OpenRouter or Vercel AI Gateway), using an API key that you provide and control. Explain This is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these providers.

3. Your license to use the App

Explain This is sold as a one-time purchase of $5 USD, with no subscription and no usage fees charged by the developer. The direct-download version is sold through Gumroad; the Mac App Store version is sold through Apple. (The current price is always shown on the store listing; if it ever differs from this page, the listing is authoritative.) A completed purchase grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the App for your own use. You may not redistribute, resell, or sublicense the App.

4. Your API key and third-party costs

You are responsible for obtaining and managing your own API key for the provider you choose, and for complying with that provider's terms of service. Any usage limits, costs, or account restrictions imposed by the provider are between you and the provider. The developer has no control over and no responsibility for any provider's service, pricing, or availability.

5. Payments and refunds

Purchases are processed by Gumroad or Apple, depending on where you bought the App, and are subject to that store's payment terms and refund policies. For billing issues or refund requests, use the store's standard support channels for your purchase.

6. Automatic updates

The direct-download version can automatically check for, download, and install updates in the background (this can be disabled in Settings). By using it with automatic updates enabled, you consent to this behavior. The Mac App Store version is updated through the App Store.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

8. No warranty; AI-generated content

The App is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind. Explanations are generated by a third-party AI model and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or out of date. Do not rely on explanations from this App as professional legal, medical, financial, or other expert advice. Always verify important information independently and consult a qualified professional where appropriate.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer of Explain This is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the App, including reliance on AI-generated explanations, third-party service outages, or costs incurred through your own API usage.

10. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. The developer may discontinue or modify the App at any time; no ongoing service uptime is guaranteed.

11. Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated as the App changes. Continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the developer's jurisdiction, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where local consumer protection law provides otherwise.
